The Métis Nation Profile is a set of web portals built for interactive data exploration with the focus on Métis specific data. With the rapid growth of data being collected through the Internet, new ways of mining this data has become necessary. Data exploration is an interactive approach to display Métis Nation developmental indicators through graphs and charts. The visual display of this data makes comparisons easier and promotes a better understanding of trends. The Data Portal infrastructure was developed to support ongoing research in the areas of Métis Nation policy development. The system provides an interactive approach to statistical analysis. The web-based platform removes barriers for researchers and supports the ongoing exploration and sharing of data.
The data sources used in this data tool include 2011 National House hold Survey, 2011 Census, and Aboriginal employment data in different sectors of the economy from year 1997 to 2014. Based on these data sets, multiple data query tools are implemented. With filters on location, Métis status, year and different employer, users can explore data categories like Aboriginal Population, Age Characteristics, Family Characteristics, Mobility, Education, Labour force status, Work activity, Occupied private dwelling characteristics, Household characteristics, Shelter costs and Income of individuals in 2010.
For any ad-hoc data inquiries, users can reach out through an online data request form that’s published on the website as well.
The long term strategic plan for this data tool is to maintain the data set up-to-date and extend/introduce new functions/tools as data needs grow.
